Covering the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada National Convention

The Life of a Steward at Convention
Jac Doerksen of St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Steinbach, MB has been to a number of conventions in his life, so when the opportunity to volunteer for this year’s national convention came about, he jumped at the chance to get involved.

This is Jac’s first time volunteering as a steward and he felt the experience was important.

“It feels good to be in the middle of things,” he said. “I like to be in the know. Sometimes when you only get notifications at your home congregation, you don’t always get everything. It’s not the same.”

Jac also says he enjoys the opportunity to meet friends, both old and new.

Stewards are responsible for handing out pamphlets, documents and anything else that needs to be shared with delegates and visitors but things have changed from past conventions.

“There’s a lot less legwork now,” Jac said. “With electronic updates, there are fewer things to hand out.”

Delegates received remote voting clickers this convention instead of the red and green voting cards that were used in the past. The voting clicker has also changed the role of the steward.

“A lot less counting,” Jac said with a laugh.
